Bile acids (BA) are the end products of cholesterol metabolism and are a class of amphipathic molecules with a steroidal nucleus. They are synthesized by the liver, stored in the gallbladder, and secreted into the intestines after eating, playing a major role in the body's clearance of cholesterol. Bile acids can emulsify dietary fats, increase the surface area for lipase action, promote the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, and many bile acids are also important signaling molecules, widely participating in glucose and lipid metabolism, energy balance, and immune regulation by activating various receptors.
